Types of Artificial Reef
Many types of AR have been deployed in Hong Kong waters. The choices of the types depend on availability of materials, suitability to the site conditions, and most importantly, the purposes of deployment.
The majority of the AR types (e.g. old vessels, concrete blocks) aim to increase the complexity of habitats in order to foster the growth and survival of fishes and other marine organisms. Some were deployed to serve as anti-trawling devices to protect the habitats from destructive fishing and were deployed at the periphery of important spawning and nursery grounds; others to function as biofilters for improving water quality in fish culture zones.
